Sweet Peas are a wonderful addition to any garden! These little spheres are a wonderful and delicious source of nutrition. One cup of cooked sweet peas has over 25% of your RDI of Vitamin C. As well as a novel combination of phytonutrients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Not only that, but they are also wonderful for the soil and nearby plants alike!
If your soil has the right bacteria peas can actually pull nitrogen out of the air. Once the pea plant breathes in the nitrogen it feeds it to these bacteria who then share it with the soil and nearby plants. This means that peas will help your other plants grow better! Sweet Peas are also quite good at breaking up soil and adding organic matter. They are even used in many cover crop blends to aid in building soil. Cover crops are grown specifically to help your soil healthy during the off months.
This is just the tip of the proverbial ice burg that is peas. They are as healthy as they are fun to grow! If you haven’t grown peas in your garden it’s never too late to start. Plus they practically grow on their own! Don’t forget to give them something to climb on though. Peas are vines and, like people, grow much better with some support.
